A brooch design featuring a long, vertical watermelon tourmaline, imagined as the strings of an electric violin.

Sketch Day 003

Watermelon tourmaline—
a gem so true to its name that it needs no explanation.
Its pink and green gradient instantly recalls a ripe summer melon.

This slender stone inspired a brooch design shaped like an electric violin.

The deep black body of the violin, I imagine, would be made of shakudō,
a traditional Japanese copper alloy that turns jet black when treated in boiling water.
Because of that, the gemstone would need to be set afterward—
but how?

From the back, perhaps, instead of from the front?
And the soldering... best done on the reverse side, to keep the surface clean.

These are the kinds of questions I quietly ask myself,
as I sketch each piece in silence.
